Are you I am… (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

This original soundtrack was composed for the surreal horror short film “Are you I am…” (In Japanese: あなたはわたしですか) directed by Ayako Ebata.

The film was screened as part of the Ayako Ebata Trilogy program at Cinema Rosa in Ikebukuro in the summer of 2024.

The soundtrack opens with “The Rain On The Window” (Track 1), where the sound of rain on the window marks the beginning of the story, reflecting one of the film’s most striking and recurring images. The motif returns as a reprise in the final scene (Track 12), gently bringing the narrative to a close.

Centered around felt piano recorded at Kuriyama’s home, the score unfolds into a textured, quietly unsettling ambient sound world.

“Old Friends” (Track 5) is the only ensemble piece on the album. As its title suggests, it was performed by Kuriyama alongside his longtime friends, with drums recorded by the talented young engineer Yuki Yoshida.

The soundtrack was mixed by Kuriyama and mastered by renowned Japanese ambient artist Chihei Hatakeyama.

The artwork features a photograph by Italian photographer Fabio Pelinga, resonating with the film’s atmosphere.
